Google Mock Ups

Mock-ups
Front cover
This is my mock front cover i have made the band name very large and central and i have have made it yellow to make it stand out. I have made the background white to make it simple and also because black and white is very linked with indie music. I have placed my masthead in the top left corner of my magazine to resemble Q. i have placed boxes around each of my feature stories because I think it helps them stand out, I have used a cross as bullet points to link with my masthead and my indie theme.

Double page spread
This is my double page, I decided to keep it simple with a large picture on the left hand page to show who the article is about without having to say. I have just copied and pasted an article about the band on the right hand page. i have added a large S behind the writing to replicate 'Q' magazine, I have put S to stand for Strokes.

Contents page

This is my mock contents page, i have decided to use a baby pink for the contents page because it links with the masthead because the masthead has so many different colours within it so i have chosen baby pink.
I decided to make the headlines different gradients of pink to show how far they are in the magazine; darker the colour the further it is in the magazine, I decided to do this because because i think it is a nice pattern to have in the contents age and makes each headline stand out. I have placed pictures with the big stories.
I have placed the issue number on the right hand page to resemble the 'Q' contents page.

Double Page Spread House Styles

In each of these double page spreads it is seen that a common theme is to have one full page for an image of the artist and the other page full of the article itself. also it seems common to have a giant letter in the center behind the writing in a bold colour; Red this is because it links to the house style of the front cover and the masthead as the masthead is on a red background. The letter seems to be the first initial of the artist or band e.g L for lady Gaga and J for Jay-z.The font always seems to be the same from the cover to the double page spread.
The size of the font doesn't seem to be any bigger than 11pt.
When the article has ended a common theme seems to be that a bold black line is placed beneath it to signify it has ended. There sometimes seems to be a quote from the article on the picture in bold red writing but it isn't on all issues.

This all creates a house style because it shows common themes throughout each issue of the magazine making these particular things be expected by the audience and if these things were not always included then it would be seen as peculiar and the magazine wouldn't have any theme.

Contents Page House Styles

In each content page a common theme is to have have the issue number on the right page and the logo and the word CONTENTS on a red banner at the top of each page.
Big stories tend to have a picture instead of writing and the other stories are written in columns with the page number to the left of the title, this is underlined by a thick red line with a short description underneath. On the right hand page in the top right corner there is a picture of the next magazine cover to promote a different product, this is a common theme within the magazine.
On the big stories there seems to be a theme to have a large page number to catch the readers eye to direct them to the big stories of the magazine.
There is a common theme to have 3 categories of stories: Features, Q review and Regulars.

This is considered a house style because these are all themes that are seen in every issue, each theme links to the front cover and double page spread as well e.g The colour red is on each of these three pages because it is the main colour of the magazine.

Colour Scheme Ideas, Name Ideas and Feature Story Ideas

Colour schemes

Name ideas

I have chosen these names because each one has something to do with indie or relates to indie in some way. For example, as shown in the word 'breathe'. Lots of indie lettering replaces A's with triangles. I have tried to choose words that relate to indie and i did this by searching the word indie into google and found some interesting words that relate to indie. I chosen the X because again these are in a lot of indie artwork and are usually filled in with different pictures E.G.....
Chosen name

I have chosen this as my name because of the amount of variation, I like how the masthead would be able to be different in every issue as the X could have a different picture within it in every magazine issue. With this being my masthead, my masthead will not have a specific colour.

Features/story ideas

  • ONE TO ONE INTERVIEW (with band or artist on front cover)
  • 50 TOP INDIE SONGS YOU MUST OWN
  • SKRILLEX? GENIUS OR JUST NOISE
  • CHANCE TO WIN TICKETS TO BANDS CONCERT
  • HIPPO CAMPUS? PART OF THE BRAIN OR NEW BAND
  • THE 1975- BACK FROM THE PAST OR LOST IN TIME?
  • HELLO, HELLO ADELE, WE CAN HEAR YOU!
  • X REVIEW OF THE WEEK (review on a certain indie band or artist; different one each week)
  • BASTILLE BACK FROM POMPEII!
  • INDIE FASHION- WHATS IN!? (one page devoted to fashion or indie shops to promote indie)
These are my feature story ideas, I believe that these will work very well because I would like to involve the reader in each and every story so by using a rhetorical question in the title I believe this will interest the reader and also make them want to read the story to find out the answer to the question itself.

Mise-en-scene Location and Prop Ideas

My first choice of mise-en-scene is actually a studio because white or plain colour backgrounds are very indie related because they are minimalist and help the artist standout this is shown of indie magazines such as indie:

I have chosen this as a mise-en scence picture because of the fencing and the look of the houses in the picture, this is because I think that the look of this would make a good indie background because of the look of it, this type of housing houses the majority of people and this means that by using it,it may appeal to the majority of people.

I have chosen this mise-en -scene picture because i think the vast amount of space in the picture would really help focus on the artist band and would draw focus to them.

I have chosen this mise-en-scene picture because of the fence and also the building in the background this is because the fence would help the band or artist stand out and also the building is the same sortof pattern asthe fencing so this looks very good in the picture because it helps to blend the picture upwards, lengthening the picture.

On my front cover I don't plan on using any props other than a stool for one of the artists to sit on, this is because i would like all focus to be on the artist, if I were to use a prop it would be something like a camera because as shown in the magazine indie (at the top) cameras are associated with indie; especially vintage ones.

I think it would be best not to use many props to keep focus on the band/artist so i will be trying for a minimalist look to my front cover.

Costume Designs

My 3 main costume ideas would be:

I have chosen these 3 costumes because in my indie band i have chosen to have 3 girls as this isn't very common in a band and indie music is about being different and independent. i have chosen these 3 outfits because i think they suit the genre and look very unique; just like indie music is.
I researched what indie clothes usually look like and I chose the three that seemed the most common to see an indie person wearing.
This will appeal to my target audience because these outfits are seen as very in-fashion for an person interested in indie music, therefore will make the band look very in-fashion.

Social Class & Demographic Of My Product

I will be aiming my magazine at working class to lower middle class people.
I will be pricing my magazine at £2.00.

As gifts I would be most likely to use: concert tickets, music vouchers or clothing vouchers. This is because i think this would satisfy the majority of my target audience.

The social class table will help with the choosing of feature stories because by using the information from each social class trends can be seen and similarities can be identified which will help choose stories. The social class will help with my target audience as again similarities can be seen with each social class and also when you see what traits are in each class then the target audience will have to have the traits.

These will adhere to their needs because the magazine will not be very over priced, it will keep them up to date with music and indie fashions.

Style/ Iconography Of My Product

Examples of fonts-

Serif (Times new roman)- This font is seen as very traditional, mainstream and well established. a magazine which uses this font is 'Q'. serif is mostly used for the Display and body of the magazine.

Decorative (Chiller)- This font is seen as a very wild and 'decorative font'. this font can only really be used in the headline or display as sometimes it is hard to read so is never used in the body of the magazine.

Sans serif (Ariel)- This font is seen as modern, fresh and clean designed. An example of a magazine which uses this font is NME. Sans serif is mostly used for the body or display of the magazine.

Script (Harrington)- this font is seen as a very fancy and classical font, this is why this font is mostly used in classical magazines. This is also mostly used in the display as the font is sometimes hard to read so isn't normally used in the body.

Block serif (Rockwell)- This font is seen as a very Americanized and is used in many USA college cultures. Block serif is mostly used in headlines and display.
